Arriving in 1973, JJ was part of the soundtrack of life on Boston’s most powerful radio stations. Throughout the 70′s he was on the air at the legendary ‘Big 68 WRKO’, then for nearly 20 years in the 80′s and 90′s held down the midday shift at the top of the ratings for KISS 108, working along with greats like Billy Costa and Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Famers Dale Dorman, Sunny Joe White, Matty Siegel, and so many more. Later, he graced the airways of Boston’s heritage radio station Oldies 103.3 until its format change in the summer of 2012.
And from a 2003 Boston Globe story on JJ, headlined, “DJ marks 30 years on Boston radio,” By Clea Simon…
Wright credits his longevity to his willingness to follow his own advice. “Keep your mouth shut and behave yourself. Just go with the flow: Take direction and roll with the changes, ’cause the changes keep coming,” he says.
And he wouldn’t consider a different career. “As long as I can talk, I’ll be doing it,” he says. “With today’s technology, we have the ability now to do it from our homes, so I’m banking on that happening.”
What will he be playing in that distant future? “I always go with the flow of the music,” says the DJ. “Since this music is so timeless, I’ll probably be playing these songs forever.”
Since retiring from the radio airwaves in 2012, JJ now operates his own voice-over and production business with his own in-home digital recording studio. One client writes: “JJ Wright has a voice that is of a deep rich timber, very smooth, soft, sexy, warm, and compassionate. In addition, authoritative, real, honest and emotional. A voice that commands attention. Perfect for narrations, documentaries, e-learning or whatever your story is that needs to be told.” JJ, a member of SAG-AFTRA, currently spends time working on many of the movies that have been and are being filmed in the Boston area, such as America Hustle, The Judge, The Equalizer and most recently, Joy and Ghostbusters.
