Highly respected TV news director who pioneered extended evening television newscasts Jim Thistle was Boston’s preeminent news director during a memorable thirty year career. To this day, Jim is the only person to have supervised the newsrooms of each of Boston’s major network affiliates. A graduate of BU’s College of Communication, he began his career at WBZ-TV, moved to WCVB-TV for eight years, and spent three years at WHDH-TV before joining the faculty of Boston University’s College of Communication in 1980. In addition to directing the broadcast journalism program there, he was chair of the journalism department. In 1988, he took a leave of absence to return to broadcast news as news director at WLVI-TV (Channel 56), and WNEV-TV, returning to teaching at Boston University.
