Fred Cusick was the radio and TV announcer of the Boston Bruins for 44 years. He is the first American broadcaster named to the Hockey Hall of Fame, and is the recipient of the Lester Patrick Award from the National Hockey League for contributions to hockey in the United States.
The son of Irish immigrants, Cusick grew up in the Brighton section of Boston and played hockey, football and baseball in his youth. He played hockey while attending Northeastern University and was twice winner of the school’s public speaking contest.
His broadcast career began in 1941 and continued until his retirement in 2002 – interrupted only by Navy service during World War II.
Cusick became the Voice of the Bruins in 1952 and called more Bruins games (both on radio and TV) than any other broadcaster. In a career that spanned seven decades, Cusick also worked with the Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots.
Cusick also created and produced radio and TV programs. A highlight was a documentary of golf legend Francis Ouimet, the only broadcast interview of the famous golfer in existence.
Cusick and his wife Barbara live on Cape Cod. They have four children and three grandchildren.
